well my first attempt at making a map was an utter failure. I guess I am not adept at MS paint. The map looked beautiful then I put it throug dragon. All the water turned to gass, sand to cave, and it was just yuck * whimpers* back to the drawing board...

most trouble people have, is the use of MS paint. Try a better program like Paint shop, or Photoshop..

Learn it by doing. Read Ryandors Tutorials, they are written for the use with Photoshop. Some points differ in newer Versions, but thats a slight problem :)

ah... and: Welcome to the world of mapping, which will cost you some days (especially nights) of your live and will turn some of your hairs gray

LOL Tell me about it. I am working on a Great map. Fun as hell and had to redo it twice already. When I get it finished though I am gonna give it to Ryandor to put up for everyone's use.

*slobbers* Okay Corel is amazing..... absolutely amazing.... I didn't know it could do all this stuff! only problem is I can't figure out how to make it quit fading between colors. ( automatically does that)

I've been using The GIMP for all my map making (and other image editing), it's a good Photoshop replacement. The new 2.0 version has lots of speed improvements, among other things. Can't beat the price either...

Im using photoshop for every little thing I do, and the large amount of functions is really useful. Paint just can't keep up with that. You don't need much functions for making a map, but there's some handy tricks that are a must (Like selecting every pixel of one color, using different brushes, playing with selections, etc.)

I advise you to use photoshop.

i used ms paint until i got my *cough* version of photoshop, but yes gimp is a great replacement and just to mention the fading of the colors is generally known as anti-aliasing which does present problems as it creates colors not understood by the dragon program creating errors....makes sure to turn blending options off or use a pencil tool instead of the blurred larger brushes.....

I don't know how to do it in Corel, but the feature you're looking to toggle is antialias. Go through the preferences looking for something with that label. Aliasing is what is causing your colors to shift, which is that shading effect you get if you draw with an actual pencil or paint brush. Like how it gets darker if you press harder. Also use pen based tools instead of pencil or brush based tools. A pen tool will emulate a solid color ink pen which doesn't create shading effects like a paint brush or pencil.

Not sure if corel has the same, but you might want to select a palette with only the colors the colortable holds. This way you just can't get any colors not used by dragon :)
