I was wondering what peoples average map build time was, this is to get from blank map to all islands etc... time should just include work on the map.

I can make a map in about 3 hrs. Then i will need an optional 3 more to touch up and add extra details

well it took me and my friend 3 weeks to get what we have. And he is a creative genius. Like he does everything perfect.

if you want to see what 3 weeks of work is for us check out my map at

dragon work only, or worldforging included? or dragon+ worldforge+buildings?

dragon work only: 2weeks-8 month, but its all a matter of size.

example 1: 2 weeks for dragon work (could have done it in 1 or less but i had to learn for school): http://www.matonor.de/unbekannt.jpg
example 2: working on it since october i think and the dragon work is almost finished: http://www.inselnderwinde.de/Daten-Matonor/Full.jpg

hmm first map so far is 3 months and im stating to spawn it but still have 2 towns to build-new malas

second map new fel/tram is in its 2nd month and it 50th trip through dragon seems the better you get at making them the longer they take
hehehehehe

odd how that works

but hey why dont you ask the guy in another part of the forums how he managed his in 4 hours draw time and 3 computer time whats his secrit....... (oh wait you are that guy) ouch shouldnt have put that jab in there

best advice i can give is it takes as much time to do it as it takes you to be happy with the finished product. my first map was the new malas and i was so happy to have created something that i could actualy walk around in and was like "WOW this is so kewl" now after devoting so much time to my next map with all the new tips and tricks and details and wanting it to be perfict that its taking much much longer. that and now i look back at the first one and go WHY DID I DO THAT all the time.... but on the brite side the peeps love it so far.

so seriously dont plan on having it in a day. take your time and get it how you want it to look. and as far as im concerned no map is crap if the time was put into it and the creator is happy with the outcome. crappy maps are the ones that are through together in a day with no attention to detail just so they can say MY shard has a custom map.

good luck and grab lots of dew

The Dragonlance map on the screenshots page? 1 year. That's without any cities or other man-made objects other than roads.

Based on my experience you'll need anywhere from 150 to 500 man-hours to get a good map. This is just the map itself with NO statics, and me working alone.
Working 8 hours a day, every day, will give you about 18 to 60 days worth of time.

Wow 150-500 man hours. I was hoping to do my new one in 25-50. Do you think that this can be brought down with some good planning before hand

That really depends on the size of map your making.. but to have much of any detail at all, time is what it takes.
But there is no way to predict the time a map will take to make... period.

Actually, it has nothing to do with an average time. That is not influencable to the map at all.

The map is done when you feel it is done. When you look at your map and you are satisfied with everything, and you believe you've hit dragons boundaries with what you want and have done, THEN your map is finished. During the process your map will change a countless amount of times. It will have to be adjusted for towns, or there you might want to see a little bit more forest. Its just personal preference. If you are pleased with your map after 20 to 25 hours, so be it. But don't count on it :P.

personally mine ushually dont take as long as others because i donnot believe in using a full size map so a medium/small sized map that can always be expanded on only takes me like 5 or 6 months

Like Inanna said.. over 2 years total.

But just map time alone.. 240 hours and counting.

Thats just me working on it alone. And somewhere along the line I seem to have become a perfectionist! So it takes a long time to get things where I am happy with them.

But that also includes the 3 times Ive changed all the forests. And customized the land to suit a certain type of look we wanted for the city (see Tremarkia its inside an old volcano ) That kind of work is very time consuming.

You using a time card, clock in when you begin map work, and clock out when you are done for the day?

I couldnt even attempt to calculate hours spent on mine..

actually the time clock is in my head...
I know how long Ive spen on it and each time I finish for the day I just add the 2 hours or 5 hours or whatever it was.

Kinda works on automatic actually. My brain just does it all by its self. No effot required..

2 years seems to be the "record" for longest build time in this thread so far...I'm very sorry to say that I break that record by far with my 5 1/2 years, and still not being done. :P

Oh, and sorry for resurrecting a 12 day-old thread :)
