 Post subject: Editing Malas map
PostPosted: Thu Feb 12, 2004 12:40 pm
How do I edit the Malas map?
I want to add things to it, but I can't find any programs that let me edit Map3.mul
I did a search (forum and Google) and didn't come up with anything, besides 2 posts from Ryandor saying it's not possible (most recently dated October, though) and 1 from someone else saying they made a custom Malas map with help from this forum (which I cannot find?)

Can anyone help me please?

I know Worldforge 6.5 supports all three maps. But, unless you're talking very minor changes, like adding a small town, WF could take some time. :)

Actually, the changes in mind are very big...
I don't go into detail incase someone nicks my idea and gets it done and completed before me :o

Thanks the link, reading it now

So, um...
Dragon said that it couldn't find the bmp (installed straight from downlaods section of this website), then when I pointed it out to it it said it was the wrong filesize, so I gave up with that...
Then I tried to download Worldforge 6.5 and the link is broken. Sends me to the jpg for a banner. :(

well, atm making a complete new map for map3.mul requires a lot more than the usual bmp creation compiled through dragon, and if you require more map work than a few alterations than what a map editor (like World Forge) can do, you are in for some work.
There is ways to replace the map3.mul, but atm it would be a process of creating a map on a standard map0.mul *.bmp... then transfering that area of the map0.mul with another program after Dragon made the initial map.
So if what you are after is ana answer of "Is there a program to replace the Malas Map?" then your answer is Yes. there is. But this will require a good bit of effort. Also, I am not remembering what the program is that will do this transition, but when I get some time later I will search my HD's for it...
Untill then, keep working on it, or searching. You are surly able to find some sources.

Okay, thanks for your help :)
What I actually have in mind is along the lines of keeping the Malas map, but I want to add some more feature to the land. Lots of wide open space that I want to fill in :)

DeadWorm: That'd be great if you could host a copy of Worldforge 6.5, so far it sounds like the best tool for the job.

Dian: So you're saying to make a map0.mul then use Dragon to turn it into map3.mul? If so, how can I rip the Malas map from map3.mul for this?

Gawin: Did you edit the Malas map or replace it?
I'm not ignorant to the time it takes to make a map, btw :) I tried making one a few months ago, but the rest of the map making team for my server left for SWG, so I joined them, recently we've quit SWG and moved back to starting up our UO server, but we've decided Malas would be good for a starting server map instead of Britannia. Just want to put some more hills and rocks in, maybe an ocean between the 3 continents :)

Stormcrow: Sorry, I don't speak Troll. Can you rephrase that please?

Dude, don't diss on stormcrow... He was making a valid point, and that is: "If you're not here to contribute, you are probably just here to leech info off of people, and that's NOT the way a community should work." You may not think so, but some people MAY have taken what you said above about nicking ideas offensive. You DID attack the integrity of the people on this board by saying what you said.

Please refrain in the future. Thank you.

About your question. I've built a custom map3 and it is incredibly simple. You just have to build a map in dragon with the standard bmp size. But only draw your map out in the upper left hand corner, and restrict it to the same width/height as map 3. This will create a new map0.mul. Then run map extractor, target the map0.mul. Target map3.mul in the second box. Run it. You have a new map3.mul

His valid point? He's calling me an asshole because I asked how to edit the Malas map. No, I'm not here to contribute, I've done a few searches and come up with nothing on how to edit the Malas map, so I came here to ask people who would know. I'm not attacking most of the people on this forum saying that I don't want to go into detail onto exactly what I want to change, because, as you just quoted, some people just breeze by forums like this without a word, and some of those some people might go "Hey, that's a good idea, I'll do that too (and tell everyone it was my idea first)"

Thanks for your help, though, but I don't want to replace the Malas map, I want to edit it, and not in a small way.

Please read my posts in future. Thank you.

P.S. Before anyone says "What a crappy attitude! You ask for help then flame us!" I'm only flaming two people, one from calling me an asshole for no reason, and the other for implying that I'm a total asshole. I'm already dubious that I'm going to get any new information than using WorldForge 6.5 or making a new map with Dragon then renaming it to map3.mul afterwards.

You cannot make a map0.mul and simply rename it to map3.mul and that is because the client will read it as if it is the malas map size, giving you a nasty mess. the client will squeeze the huge map into the size malas is suppose to be, and it will be completly scrambled in game.
So to anwer your Question, yes you have to make the initial map on a map0.mul, then with a tool, you "copy" that area of the map0.mul and "paste" it into a map3.mul... Dont know how to make it more clear.. as it was already explained a couple times already here.
Other than that method, you have just another choice, and your right.. World forge, editing tile by tile.
Fortunatly, there may be other methods in the future, but thats about it for now.. just a few variations of those methods.

I think there has been enough attacks and/or misunderstandings here, keep future posts on the board topics, and not towards personal attacks.

-Thanks

Okay, I just want to make it clear that I WAS NOT FLAMING ANYONE! What I was trying to do was stop the flaming, because it's not good for the community.
Quote:

I was not calling you nor implying you where an asshole. I was stating that people took offense to what you said. I myself in the short month that I've been on this board have had more than 6 people (6!!!) IM me on my free time, and ask me how to do something as far as editing the map. Then after I help them, they have the NERVE to act like a dick to me, or act like they're better than I am. I think all to often some of these people forget their place, or where they came from, or the reason this board was put in place.

I don't want to fight with you, I want to inform you. That's the reason why I answered your question. I also did not post anything that didn't contain any kind of usefull information. But if you didn't like the way I put it, here, I'll rephrase it for you:

In the future, I would appreciate it if you would think about the way things are going to come across to others before you say it. I also think it would behoove you to make yourself a little more clear in your requests when you are asking for help on this board, or at least gain a working knowledge of what you're asking so that way when you're question is answered you understand it. Or at least you won't be responding with "Please read my posts in the future. Thanks." I read your posts, and I gave you the answer to your problem, there are bmps of malas already created to run in dragon. Check out http://members.cox.net/darkshard/ It's got a full map of Brittania with Malas and Ilshenar built in. Therefore you could edit Malas with Dragon. You also could've simply gotten a map to bmp converter... that would have done the trick as well. And it would go much quicker than editing tile by tile.

Quote:
No, I'm not here to contribute

Okay... well thanks for being honest about your character.

B.T.W. This was not a flame, nor was the post before. If I was flaming you my post would have tore you up one side and down the other probably filled with cussing and lewd refrences to colostomy bags. I don't have to know someone to insult them. This post wouldn't have insulted me, but that doesn't mean it won't insult you. The point is, I informed you that you had insulted others... then you took offense to that. Stormcrow called you an asshole, I did not. Whether I thought you where or not, I wouldn't post like that on this board. I have to much respect for it. And when I said don't diss stormcrow I was looking out for you more than anyone else. Stormcrow has been around a while, and contributed a lot, and is many people's (including my) friend. You or I will be removed permanently from this board before he will. I can almost gaurantee that.

So for refrence the definition of flame is:"To attack someone verbally with the intention to cause insult."

Think before you speak.

Must say that stormcrow and Nazgel make sense. What you did in your first post was basically accuse the users of this forum of stealing ideas. You could've let that out, and no one would've cared. I understand you could've said something similar (in a nicer way) when someone asked. But then again, I don't see what stormcrow is getting angry about. It's not that much of a deal.

Can't we just all be friends :(. On topic then: I wonder if Sydius' mapmaker tool will be able to alter Malas... You could always suggest it to him on www.sydius.com/forum :) He's looking for more suggestions into his mapmaker tool.

(from Dictionary.com)

Code:
troll

v.,n.
1. ....
2. An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1;
regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a
newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to
annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by
the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic
at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly
creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming
characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of
life on the net, as in, "Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll."

What he did in the first place is pretty much what everyone else here does, only he said it rather than acted it. I dare everyone in this thread to say they've got absolutely no secrets in their shard or anything at all they wouldn't share with the public.

I wouldn't post everything about my shard here, nor would I post all my ideas. Even *if* I trusted all the regulars not to steal my ideas or work, I certainly wouldn't trust the random passersby that have no loyalty to this community nor care in the world for me or my hard work.

Before this peaceful and friendly community turns into an elitist pack of jackals, I'd recommend you all read his posts thoroughly and think about them before responding. No where was Graendur out of line, even after he was called an asshole, he was polite and mature.

What got me stirred up about it? Let's see...aside from Nazgel, Armada, Gawain and Viperious, it seems like the newcomers lately have been of the worthless leech variety. As I said the first time I called him an asshole; it was uneccessary to say and it doesn't make a good first impression to me. He should have just stopped after "the changes in mind are very big" that was all the information anyone needed anyway.

As far as "stealing my hardwork" you (Rose) seem to have been influenced overly much by Sphere, just like a lot of people. Mine, mine, mine.....my precious....nasty...tricksy...mapmakers.

We do this for fun (or most of us). I can't see why people get so possessive. We ALL stole this from Electronic Arts in the first place. We can play because people who reverse-engineered (Damian can argue the finer points of the term all he wants, in a nutshell it is still what was done) the UO server engine and shared it with us. We can make maps because people who made tools to edit the map shared them with us. In the near future we are even more easily going to be able to make better maps because the guys at Orbsydia besides having the skill to make it happen, also have the right attitude towards the community.

If someone wanted to steal your map all they have to do is have a player account on your shard. Don't listen to Ry when he says map2bitmap doesn't work; I've got a nearly complete reverse compile of the OSI map. I don't think I have to spell out the implications. Is it wrong for other people to take what you made, change it around, and call it their own? It sure is. Is it going to happen? It sure is. Can you do a damn thing about it? Yeah, sure, you can not share your creations with anyone. What was the point of making it then? Be happy you made something other people considered worth using. Now I can see the problem of credit, because while I'd be flattered someone wanted to run a shard on one of my maps, I would be upset if they just stole it and said they made it themselves. Does it really matter? If someone stole your map Rose and went to any number of EMU sites spouting off about how it was their new map that they made, everyone would know they were full of shit and say no, you stole it from Tragena.

Thank you for defending me, RoseThorn. :)

Stormcrow - My problem is not that someone will steal it (as you just said, it's inevitable), my problem is that someone will take my idea and start making it while I'm still trying to figure and find out how to edit the map file in the first place, and then finish it and tell everyone that they made it first and that it's their idea, thus labelling me and my server as a lameass clone server for it.

And you'll notice that I haven't registered my name, Stormcrow, because I'm not here to hang around regularly to be a "worthless leech", I just popped by to ask a question.

Quote:
I don't go into detail incase someone nicks my idea and gets it done and completed before me

And my mistake there, I actually meant to type "I don't want to go into detail incase someones nicks my idea and gets it done and completed before me"
I apologise for that if this is what started you off attacking me, Stormcrow.

I know full well my muls will be stolen, and my opinion on it (and what it looks like Graendur's opinion is too) is that *I* want to be the first person to use *my* work. Tragena isn't finished, and therefore we haven't gotten to use it live yet, therefore I do *not* want someone else using it. Is that so much to ask? Really?

I don't care how the other emu communities behave. I know how human nature works. I'll be a thief to the ends of earth if that's what you want to think of me as (for using a UO emu in the first place), but I'll happily be one with *MY* hard work. People are lazy and worthless for the most part. While there may be 50 wonderful sharing and caring people per emu community (or 5 or 500), there are easily 1000 times that in people that will only take and take. Do I want to give to those people? No. Do I feel I'm greedy or self-centered for thinking this way? Nope!

I'm not building Tragena for fortune and fame, or a huge playerbase, or to impress anyone. The Tragena staff are doing this for us - ourselves - nobody else. I served my time as script dev for sphere, I donated some of my personal scripts to the default script pack and I donated tons of hours of my time fixing up those scripts or reorganizing them to be more usable. I've submitted scripts from Tragena - that were generic and/or not Tragena history specific - to scriptsharing.org or the sphereserver forums. I have no problems with sharing work, but if we got it finally finished after 2+ years of working on it only to find a dozen or more other shards out there already up and running as perfect Tragena clones.... how exactly do you think we'd feel? The idea of sharing everything within a community is great, really. But it's not for me.

Well I can't speak for everyone else here RoseThorn, but I would share everything about my shard. And as soon as I get my pages up, every graphic, every custom script etc... will be available for download. Does this make me better than anyone else? No. Does this make me an elitist jackal? I'd think not. Does it make me a nice guy, who later people would say "Man, that Nazgel sure does help a lot of people out. Maybe I should do the same thing to help out the community." Of course, I'm starting now to wonder. It really sucks to try to help someone and them come off with a crappy attitude towards you at a later time. I'd heard of it happening before, but never knew how it felt until it happened to me.

Needless to say, some people just aren't worth helping, but I havn't stopped helping anyone I could on these forums. So I fail to see how anybody would take what I'm saying as a flame? :?

Let's face it, the Ultima Online community is full of: Leeching, lying, untrusting, untrustworthy, simpletons who are willing to take something someone did and claim they did it. Stormcrow, Dev Vipirrious, Myself and a slew of other people are just plain sick of this. To tell you the honest truth I find this kind of behavior disgusting. These are the kind of people who will come and ask you for advice, take it from you and never even say thank you. What the heck am I doing this for then? I just keep telling myself that someday there will be a community full of people who WANT to help each other above everything else. A group of people who would rather have a bad element removed from the get go... especially if they had been warned once. This may sound elitist and I'm sorry if it does. I call it looking out for the betterment of the community. Ever since I joined this forum and met these nice people here, that's what my main concern has been. I've found inspiration in what Vipperious has said. I think if everyone went and read some of what he's wrote on his webpage we'd all be better off for it.

I can understand that Rose. Some of it I still don't agree with; but noone can say that you have not given back to the emu community, and if that's the way you feel I can respect it. I'm not a communist, I don't expect everyone to share everything (hell, some people who clog up download sites with some of the worst crap I have ever seen, I wish they wouldn't share ANY of their work).

Ok you all spoke my name 3 times thus releasing me from my prison in the bowels of hell!
My 1.75 cents worth of comment is... she is right to be paranoid, everyone else is right for being hurt by the comment but I don't think it was intended to offend. I've been ripped off A LOT since I have been doing this stuff but I still keep plugging along. I don't mind sharing my ideas with anyone because of my perspective in life in my old age. I know they were my ideas and thats all that matters to me anymore, so they can go ahead and do what ever their going to do because thats the way people are. Three types; Good, Bad and just trying to make it alive till tomarrow. Now in the case of RoseThorn's world I can see wanting to hold onto something like that and actually be the first, but pretty much everyone in the UO community knows her because she has been around a while and would flame any newb to death for trying to pass her wonderful creation off as their own, hell even I would pounce on them and I've butted heads with her in the past (its just as hard as mine  ) but there is a huge difference between what I do and what she is doing.
As for Graendur, I think its sad that you have no desire to hang around. These are good people and I think we can learn a lot from one another. New ideas are needed for our little world because some of us older citizens are moving on to other things in life and there are so few to take our place in the ranks. We don't always get along but then again most brothers and sisters don't (pulls RoseThorns hair!) but in the end we all have our purpose in the UO Community. Let us get off on a little better footing.

Hello Graendur, my name is Dev Viperrious. Sitemaster of Serpentsmoon.com my niche is providing free graphics and animations for our little world. It is nice to meet you and welcome to Ryandor Forums, the best map making site in the UO Community. :)

Thank you very much, Dev Viperrious, for the welcome. :)

Again, thank you to everyone for helping, and apologies to Stormcrow for posting before your morning coffee, and to Nazgel for flaming him. When Nazgel posted
Quote:
You DID attack the integrity of the people on this board by saying what you said.
I thought you were implying that I deliberately said it to attack the integrity of the people of this forum, and therefore implying that I am an asshole.

And by saying that I'm not here to contribute, I mean I can't help at all with map making processes (heck, I still can't edit Malas after all this help, I'm sectioning off an area of Trammel for now), but if you want me to give back to the EMU community, I can give ideas for stories, help a bit with scripting and Error fixing on RunUO.

Sliding back to my previous comment about not being able to edit Malas.. What is the colour to draw in a bitmap for star tiles?
Thanks in advance :)

As for the footing...
Hello Dev Viperrous, my name is Graendur. Lead (Read: Only) Seer for a server that currently has no unanimous name (since the other members of the staff have slightly different ideas on what to call it). My niche is providing cheesy villains and class balancing for anyone who wants 'em. :) Nice to meet you too, thank for your welcome. :) I'll stick around a while and see if I can contribute in some way to make up for the flaming.
