Whenever i use dragon to make a map file, it gets to like 98% and then stops responding and won't finish.

First, when using dragon, it's best to give it it's own copy of the map to work on. Don't use the map0.mul in your client directory.
So, make sure you have a copy of a map0.mul in the dragon folder, and point Dragon to that. Also, make sure the map0.mul is NOT read only (right click, properties).

Run it again, and just watch it. Does it give any kind of error? What is the last thing it says it's doing?

It sounds like the problem I had where it froze at 97%. Which i fixed by shortening the directory path/name that the map0.mul file was in and making sure there was no spaces in that directory path/name. (thanks to ryandors help)

Because the client.exe and or other programs that use map0.mul sometimes forget to stop using it, so then you don't have write access, noticed dragon sometimes forgets to stop using write access as well. If you make a NEW map0.mul, and keep it in a maps directory somewhere, genrally works better, especially for making multple backups.

Dragon's speed is directly related to the detial of the map. If you have just some basic landscape it will go quite fast, but if you have lots of transitions it will take longer. It also depends on how much free ram you have. If you have Photoshop open at the same time, it will be a bit slower as well. And of course the faster computer you have, the faster it will run. If you are using Win98, there is a memory leak that can affect your computer overall as well. Try rebooting and see if that helps.
A typical detailed full map takes about 6 minutes or so on my AMD 1.68 Ghz with 1GB ram running WinXP Pro (and I usually have Photoshop open).
