A friend sent a message:
Quote:
I've successfully installed age of shadows and the uo gateway download and I'm looking for a good world with a playerbase tolerant of newbies to get my feet wet. Recommendations?

As most of you know I don't really play much at all, so I figured I'd ask everyone out there and give a chance for a bit of free publicity in the wrong forum. :P
I'm thinking a good relaxed roleplaying shard with some quests and such, and doesn't have to be a custom world (but it's a bonus!)

Who's got it?

My friend should be watching this thread, so put on your best PR hat! :D

One of the best RP shards out there (and I'm not just saying that cause I play on it, I've tried tons of shards like TSSE and Teiravon).

Hmm, I wouldn't know, I haven't tried it, and I plan to. But then you can't say it's better than Dark Age because you haven't tried Dark Age, either. So nyeh.

Let's not turn this thread into a "whose shard is the best RP shard" speil.

This guy may not even be looking for RP.

Oh, and Galavorn. Don't compare anything you have played or are playing to TSSE. You're not equiped to even make judgement considering you were banned from that shard for using many different accounts for muling, player killing, causing grief while using non-roleplaying methods.

Eh

So what kind of shard is your friend looking for? Perhaps he should check out Top 200.

So because I was banned I can't judge it? Sorry, doesn't work like that.

Enough. This thread is for links to shard for my friend to try. All other posts will be deleted. If you want to debate, take it to the Whatever forum. You can flame all you want in there. *hint*

If the guy wants to roleplay (I'm assuming he does since most newbies don't immediately become 1337 d00ds), I highly recomend Fallen Ashes. Although I haven't been on any of the other places that have been posted, I have played on many roleplay shards and it's the best I've seen as of late.

From experience, this is an absolutely amazing RP shard. When I am not developing my own shard, I am probobly playing on this one.

As for newbie tolerence that depends, they really are not concerned with signority, but with your ability to role play. If your RP skills are not up to par, they might become a little aggrivated.

Of course, that is if you are looking for an RP shard. If not then there are loads of "general" shards, each with different qualities. You might want to try TDS because it has a big community and not lag (because I host it ;) ), http://www.tdsuo.com

See? Look Xelah's played lots of other RP shards and he says FA is best.

And anyway, I can tell you that Fallen Ashes is extremely newbie friendly. If you're starting out RPing or UOing then there are a lot of people willing to help you figure things out there.
And despite being newb friendly, FA manages to keep and excellent RP environment.

Uh, Hurk, I've played alot of RP shards and QuickSilver obviously has and we both say Dark Age is the best so your comment is void.

both of you, take it to the whatever board.

Ry,
If your friend wants to 0wNz0r b1c+h3z, just about any place that allows that sort of behavior is good.

I haven't played there in ages, but it's extremely newbie friendly, and has varying amounts of RP depending on the player/group. The playerbase is polite and helpful, and you won't be pk'd the first 10 mins on the shard (if ever).

Is it just me, or do all theses "newbie friendly" shards have really depressing names?

As for griefing, PKing, and being l33t? you guys act like that kind of thing is bad. Don?t make me break out my l33t hally of vanquishing and slaughter your miners for no apparent reason!

I?m deh l33test of them all! W00t!

I?m warning you guys, I?m armed with peanuts!

Seriously though, I have never in my life seen a shard that has been balanced or fun that didn?t have both elements.

80% good, 20% bad. That?s the combo that works. The 20% bad is offsetted by the power being bad gives a person.

Without the bad, there is nothing for the good to do. Without the majority being good, the bad have it too easy.

A lot of shards try to make up for not having ?evil? players by having ?evil? NPCs? but those NPCs suck? why? because they are powered by an AI that is a thousand times less intelligent than an ant. That?s why.

Then there are those shards which allow for ?evil? ?role-players? but at the same time, limit their evilness? That completely destroys the entire point. Those people aren?t evil, they are just as good as any of the other goodies, the only difference is they PRETEND like they aren?t. They do a horrible job at it, too.

There is absolutely no way in my mind that anyone will be able to justify not allowing PKs or thieves. Nor can you limit them by anything more than in-game laws (such as the town guards killing a thief on sight).

Anyone who believes running around and randomly killing any helpless newbie you see is completely unrealistic has their head up their ass when it comes to medieval history. Not a damn person could leave town back then in real life without a very high chance of not coming home alive.

It?s a very real threat, but that threat is what makes it a *GAME* and not a chat room on steroids. That threat is the only real challenge in the game since NPCs are completely predictable, and, well, STUPID.

Not to mention the amount of depth it adds by forming bonds between different styles of play ? a miner hires a guard to guard him while he mines, and thus the prices of his ore is a lot higher, which dictates the prices of armor and weapons, which in turn gives that warrior a need for that bit of money he gets from the miner. Then, of course, there is the entire aspect of guarded escorts and the never-ending battles between the hoards of evil (when they can cooperate long enough to form a hoard) and the do-gooders of the local cities.

As for the personal insults they often lay on you before, during, or after a kill ? I?ve heard many state that is the worst of all. Oh my hell, he said ?j00 sux0rz!? instead of ?Thou dost do battle as well as mine swine!?? I mean, really. You don?t bitch when an Orc says ?Me gunna clomp ju!?? Same thing. I just look at it as a different language.

Role-playing is NOTHING ABOUT LANGUAGE ANYWAY. Role-playing is about playing the *ROLE* of someone in a medieval world, and if the game is constructed well enough, that?s hard to avoid. Sure, people find loop-holes and become ?power gamers? ? which I agree need to be stopped, but for the most part it doesn?t matter how you talk, it only matters how you play the game. I've never met a PK who didn't act very simmilar to real murderers and brigands of ages long past. The only difference is that he stated his goals of love of blood in a different language born in the moddern era.

So there you have it.

Don't quite agree with sydius there. Not really in the mood to get into it though right now.

Shards?
http://draspha.theasylum.us/showthread. ... hreadid=10
Not up yet. Will be up in a few months we hear. Very ambitious plan and the admin swears he will make good on all of it and hes very believable. Definitely worth checking out the message board and the shard itself when it does come up.

Theres a host of other shards that friends of mine have recommended and such but I need to find those links. When I find most of them i'll post em.

What's the point of suggesting shards that won't be up for another year or more?

Clean out my ears to read? Anyway, have you ever heard of the shard Norwegian Wood? At first, they said it would take a year... so far they're not done with four years passed (and don't think they have a lazy staff, the owner of the shard is Xuri Dabur, one of the people of the UOX team and a very well known person in the emu community). Every shard with so many features takes a shitload of time, and Draspha won't be finished in a few months, trust me. And besides, even if they do finish in a few months, the guy is looking for a shard that is up now.

Xuri is still playing around with the map, last I heard. He refuses to use anything but WorldForge? He?s placing one tile at a time by hand. It?s a matter of principle to him, I think.

It will be interesting, but even his shard doesn?t sound as appealing as the original UO (from ?97).

Actually, Sydius, I talk to him almost every day and last I heard the map is pretty much finished but UOX isn't any good yet (not good enough to run a shard), although he already has a bunch of scripts such as character creation.

Fair enough. And Draspha was suppose to have originally opened in june. Maybe that means the delays been used up and it really will open in the (new) expected time frame.
