While in a bought of boredom I went over to Orbsydia's site and found this...

Out of date? I would disagree with that since it seems to be the "ONLY" site that actually helps anyone with map design or creation for UO.

Orbsydia would seem to be more out of date than here since the halls there are even emptier.

While I wouldn't say this site is "outdated" they do have a point. I've not developed anything for Dragon in quite a while.

It's really the forums that keep it alive here.

As long as the forums are alive, Ryandor.com will be around.

I'd still give them a good pimp smacking just to set the record straight.

You've probably figured out by now that I basically ignore all the "scene" politics.
But that doesn't mean I'd stop you from bitching about it!

Yeah, Ry likes having his little imps do all his dirty work. Me, I didn?t mind, I enjoyed pissing people off. *zaps you with a cattle prod*

I think the site isn?t that outdated; what would you update, anyway? It?s a site for modifying a game that is nearing 8 years of age; not a heck-of-a-lot has changed over those 8 years in map-making that hasn?t been covered here. Sure, people here cling to the outdated Dragon, but that?s only because it is the most documented and because they don?t know what they are missing by not using my tools in conjunction with others (heh, I had to throw that in) or the tools other people have been developing.

Not a lot of development is going on which could be covered, anyway, though. Really, it has just about ground to a halt in most areas of UO emulation. The people to do the development just aren?t around anymore, or are so scarce and spread out that a good clump of them can never be found working on a single project worth mentioning.

Keep in mind that Sirens Song isn't an admin over there, the outdated thing is probably her opinion and not necessarily that of Orbsydia.com. :)

You would have thought Ryandor would of posted the link to his site then he could of slandered her site and called it something like "All pink and frill's and full of hot air. A true chic shard where men are neutered like the dogs they are!"

But hey I'm both drunk and evil so what do I know?? :P

I don?t think the lack of shards and maps being developed is a comment on the game itself, its more like most people are too damn scared to do anything with an EMU in case they get sued for their trouble!
Not sued by the one company who actually has the right to, but sued by some self-proclaimed god who ?owns? the EMU he made.
Although how one can be sued over something that?s illegal is beyond me!

I?m so past being angry at them all. Now I?m just sad that a great game has virtually been killed by the people who started out to make it better.

What a shame..

I must be missing something? what is all this about being sued?

Anyway, for the record, it is legal to create and operate a UO server. Playing UO while operating a server, however, is in the gray area since it goes against the TOS, but that is not something EA would bother with.

It is illegal to redistribute any copy-written work, including software, art, sounds, etc. Unless said otherwise, the original creator owns the copyright to whatever was made, and that can be enforced legally.

So? what is all this about being sued?

You can run any emulator you have ? that?s not illegal ? even if it was obtained illegally.

You can use any custom stuff you have ? even obtained illegally ? as long as you don?t redistribute it.

?

For quite a while there, the people at Sphere were making lots of noise about suing anyone who used any sphere version other than the official releases. That included any 55irwhatever versions and any sphere versions that people had obtained a core version of and were rewriting it to fix all the old problems.

Basically, Damian had lost control of his EMU and everyone was jumping ship to go with the new (and better) versions. This was his attempt to regain control.

While most old timers would know all about poor little Damian, it was and may still be enough to stop any newcomers from wanting there own version of sphere.

At one stage he even said he wouldn?t let anyone use his EMU without prior approval. Which of coarse is rubbish because the EMU is available for free and public download from their site.

It was this kind of foolish and childish behaviour that forced many nails into the coffin of the EMU UO community.

It has never recovered.

Afterthought.. Hay Syd. Dont forget, if you started making money from charging people to play your UO EMU, EA would really take an intrest in you.

They could take all the interest they want? as long as I do not have the client installed, nothing is illegal about it.

Truth is, I do plenty of things which are illegal that I am not even aware of (like the rest of you), and they could easily crucify any of us if they REALLY wanted to.

It doesn?t much matter what the law is when you go up against lawyers getting that kind of money! They?ll find some obscure technicality to nail you with.

I posted about this "illegality" topic over on RunUo and on Sphere months...maybe years ago.

By trade, (in rl) I am a technology attorney. By night, I have been shard developing for over 7 years.

My informal advice to the emu community has been basically two short points: 1. dont redistribute client or game files (downloadable clients, or non released CURRENT versions such as SE) and 2. dont charge for people to play on your server (server 'donations' to help defray the hosting costs are a gray area).

I know EA from past dealings and they will not bring a costly suit unless they expereince severe economic harm or some form of SUBSTANTIAL trademark infringment. Be a smart shard admin and stay in the areas that we have all remained for years... ;-)

Now..Blizzard....well...they are another story.

Cheers,

Adam
