g'day guys & gals :)
I know we are all really busy and dont have the time to read each others news updates all the time. But this is so big I thought I might share it with you all..
There are actually 3 big things

No. 1
New EMU by Dragonfire
Wednesday, September 1, 2004
Hands up all of you who think we will never open?
Hands up al those who think we haven?t had any news worth posting in the past year or so?
Hands up who think this shard has stalled and is going nowhere?

Well, put your hands down and listen up! I have some news for you all that may change everything!

Several months ago a few of us put our heads together (that can only mean trouble!) and we took a serious look at our Emulator (shard).
We weren?t at all happy with many areas of it. Least of which, the way the program creators kept acting. We looked at many other Emulators (wolfpack RunUo etc) to weigh up the pros & cons of them to see if it was worth changing over to them. As all the current Emulators are written different, no matter what one we chose it would mean a great deal of work to rewrite our custom scripts to run on them.

So after looking at all their good points and all their faults we decided we didn?t care for any of them. And so the work began..
That?s right friends, we started writing our very own Shard Emulator!

Let me touch on just a few of the highlights..
* All scripts will be hard coded (like RunUO). This will give greater speed and less lag.
* Tragena is now 100% customizable! And we have already implemented many new ideas.
*Our code is fresh and new and there are no ?bottle necks? of old code like our old EMU had.
*All our scripts and our systems, like the crafting and magic system, were already unique to Tragena so will be rewritten and updated to slip right in to the new Emulator.
*We no longer have to worry about what someone else thinks is the right or wrong way to run our shard. This is our baby!

So what does this mean to the players?
*Faster shard speed!
*Tragena can be customized to suit whatever needs may arise in the future.
*MANY new and amazing features!!

Now before you ask let me answer you..
*No? The code will not be open source.
*No? We will not be giving the code out. This is ours and its staying here. Where we can control it.
*Is the new code finished yet?.. No its only about 20% finished
*Will it ever be finished?? I hope not. There is always room for improvement and growth.
*Will this slow down the opening of Tragena?.. Unfortunately, yes. We don?t know by how long. But I?m sure it will be worth the wait!
*Who is writing this new code?? We are! lol Who do you think? There are a few of us working on it. But I can tell you that our very own V is leading us and she is just amazing!

I know this must seem a huge disappointment to those of you who have been counting the days for us to open. But think of it this way, Its just a natural progression! After all we already have custom hues, verdata, art, map, tiles, clothes, gumps, skills, magic and custom everything else! Why not a custom Shard to run it all on?

So is THAT news big enough?

I sure hope so! Other than ?We are open?, the news just doesn?t get any bigger!
Rest assured friends, we are hard at work every single day!
Tragena is alive and well!

Thanks for your patience!
But like Rose reminded me a few months ago, ?it would be such a waste and a shame to open before Tragena is finished! Don?t waste the past 2 years!?

News item #2

update by Dragonfire
Friday, September 3, 2004
It?s amazing how weeks of work and some really big news looks almost insignificant when typed into a few lines of text!

But here it is regardless..
Work on the EMU progresses nicely and V can now log in with a client. And that?s a HUGE thing! The consol looks great too!

As the original OSI clients are very limited, V is writing the new Tragena EMU to specifically support the Iris Client. We are not sure if the original clients will still work on Tragena. But they are not a priority at this time. We will however have a fully customizable client! Programs like Injection and other cheat programs will not function on our server! And that?s got to be worth all the effort!
Go V!

Building continues on the build server. The trade city of Kael is finished as far as the buildings are concerned. Only the deco to go now. I have made a few new wall tiles for the buildings as well.

And several of our web pages have been updated. Go me! lol

More news next week?

and item #3

"V has been working with a new God Client that lets us do everything from inside the game! Even remove statics and change the map mul tiles, all in real time and across both the client and server files. This might not sound much if you don?t understand how hard this is to do. But let me tell you its just amazing!"

Image

This is the original OSI god client that does everything!
I wish I could tell you all its easy to get working, but its not. It took us about 3 weeks to get is running with most of the options working. But in the long run its worth it as now we dont have to worry about World Forge etc.

So this is all our awesome news. A new EMU, a new Client and the original God client for the building/map work.
I'd also like to mention most of this work is due to one lady, V.
Through her, Im sure Tragena will have a long and bright future!

And after we have finished Tragena? Well... we have some plans for that too. A game of our own making..

But that's news for another day ;)

Thanks mate!
lol no, Rose is still Inanna.
V is short for Veronica
She's been with us for over a year now.
V was also just promoted to Admin and Head Dev for coding etc.

This is the same problem I've always had. I understand just about any emu I see hit the shelf, but I havn't really ever tried to understand the fine details. I guess if you wanted to build your own emu the best thing to do would be to would to contact an open source emu project currently going on. Steam is currently open source isn't it? I thought there was a linux / Solaris UO emu at one time as well... I can't remember if that was open source however...

In fact are there any open source UO emulators?

I can understand why you wouldn't want to make any of your programming open source. While I have for a while now been into the open source community, and love it for what it does, I can say that I do understand.

What about posting some notes though, oh mighty Dev's of Tragena? I mean this is just an idea, but I know there are a lot of people out in the world who would love to be able to build there own emulator. I for one have been trying to figure out ways to break, alter, change, twist, and customize the UO client since I got into the UO emu community.... just because I had so many ideas on how I could make it better... More or Larger maps for one, building it to work with IRIS only would be a deffenit plus as well.

The bottom line is UO is STILL a fun game, and with the UO emu Community the game could be just as good as any of these new MMORPGS you see out there.

We've got 3D, we've got customisability, we can build clients, there are those out there that have stripped UO down to the bone and understand every last detail of the way this thing works.

Frankly I wish I did, and I would love it if there where someone willing to teach it, or to point in the right direction of where to learn. And I'm not saying I don't know a good share of information already (as far as building servers for chatting, web serving, possibly building a game server from scratch) I've already got the basics down. Web design is what I do for a living, but understanding the web in general is what I do as a past time.

People don't want to share their source code, and that's respected. But the question is this... is anybody willing to share the information?

Wolfpack (http://www.wpdev.org) is open source. Runs on linux too. It's my new favorite :)

SteamEngine, yes.

Actually, there are quite a few, though most of them are forks from UOX (SteamEngine is not, Tupi was not, and I've forgotten the others, if there were others).

The packet guides that're out there have some of the information, there are file formats guides out there too, and if you know where to look there's quite a bit of information out there, but much of it is embedded in source code for various projects, many of them dead.

If you can read source-code, some of the best references you'll find will be the source of other open-source projects. I suppose the main reason why there are no comprehensive guides to making a UO server is because if you have the knowledge to make one, you are probably already busy trying to make a UO server yourself, and making a comprehensive guide would take away from your time. :P

BTW, for packet guides:
