Im somewhere between absolutely not and I can deal. Where inbetween depends on what level system were talking about.

Part of the reason I hate leveling system is because it means requiring killing. One should not get blacksmithing skills from killing monsters and they for sure shouldnt be required to kill monsters. It is possible to play UO more peaceful. It doesn't have to be all hunting and stuff.

Another reason is because skills alone make a large difference in power. Depending on how its done levels can increase even further the gap between experienced players and newer players. I personally like it when the slop of power gain is more gradual. So that a bit of experience doesn't make you a superman compared to less experienced persons. I hope you guys get what I mean by this.

Some people of course like lording over newbies. The whole point of playing so much for them is the ability to lord over newbies with their extra power since they got so much extra time to play. Not that they need a level system to do this anyways. Skill system is much more realistic.

Heard of some leveling systems where levels dont mean much other then a way to signify accomplishment. Of course if thats ones goal some kind of medal system would be better.

Well my idea for a level system works as such

Basicly it has the same idea as the everquest levels you gain a level it raises the skill and stat cap so much im thinking 5 or so, and of corse limit the total skill and stats instead of making classes.

Then not only killing gives xp but also crafting gives xp maybe mining and lumberjacking as well until a certian skill level. But harder items to craft give more xp, and as you get higher level smaller things no longer give xp, that gets rid of people making alot of small items to gain skill.

With that i would have to increase the crafting menu's to be more productive and worth while to players.

I think with that system you feel you still have the freedom you get from playing uo, players feel they are gaining more from doing these basic things instead of feeling them a chore, and it makes it easier to control the economy. Any server glitches that exist as long as the level system is scripted correctly wont have a bad effect on every one.

I don't know though there is most likly somthing im over looking.

Well actually your approach if I understand it correctly sounds interesting enough.

Are you saying each level would allow you to add so much to a skill or stat cap? Then make for a reasonable max level gain?

That combined with a level gain only when making items you havent made for awhile monsters you havent killed in awhile. So that it requires you to mix up your skill use and such... it would make for a interesting antimacro measure.

Otherwise I don't see too many pluses or minuses with it. Simply not worth the effort it seems. Level system is also more fitted for non rping shards because of its affect on realism. If your having trouble with macro'rs who site around all day doing something over and over to GM then go for it.

I think level systems are a great idea. Once your skills are capped, what's the difference? Same thing... So you can gain skills to the max and gain levels to further increase attributes and gain new skills while leveling up. I think it's a wonderful thing. I am currently designing a RunUO server and I have a level system created with Race Factions that I created as well. It's coming along very nicely. I say go for it, design a level system. But, one thing to consider is figuring out how PvP should work with the level system. You can restrict players from attacking other players if the difference between their levels is too great. But, then players will not like that because they can't just attack anybody. That is something I am currently trying to figure out...

I suppose that depends you could just restrict it so people cant pvp until past a certian level that way there is no noob slaughtering and what not or you can just prevent players from pvp with a certian level diffrence which is actualy more fair pvp wise. Or you could do both :D

Well, we aren't the biggest community here. Maybe try posting your poll in your chosen emulator's forum.

Mmmm no thought about it but most of those forums are filled with bickering children and newbies that havn't tried a level system nor would most that posted have thought it out, but most of the people that come through here have obviously thought a little more about thier shard (or at least the ones that do more than post once and disapear) so these are the opinions i want... damnit

A level system could be combined with Special abilities. The abilities earned with the level according to ones class(assuming you have a class system)

Heheh me personaly I dont realy think a class system would go well with uo, takes away the freedom to choose what you would like to be at any time in game, but a class system also opens up all kinds of fun scripting ideas and new quests and things.

Well alot of shards have adopted class system with positive outcomes.

Without class systems there really is no classes. Just formless blobs :p

But just like a skeleton system the key is to provide both flexibility and structure. Class systems give unique flavors.

True, I can see where the class system can be very good, but I just think players should be able to shape that blob themselves other than have a set mindless path

but thats just me :D
