 Post subject: My plans...
PostPosted: Sun Jun 08, 2003 2:00 pm
I want a small map, and by small I mean SMALL. A city...some area on the outside and that's basically it for now. Once I have that I want to go into the game and actually decorate the city etc. I have no one direction I play on taking this map, nor do I plan on making a server for people to play on (just me, my gf, my brother and a few real life friends for RPing). I have Photoshop but can't use it to save my life. I've read the MSPaint guide on this site and I think I will end up using that. So, this is what I'm asking....
I make the map with MSPaint, open up Dragon, convert my map into map0.mul. Run DragonSP and let it generate tree's and what not. Now, I want to be able to play, build, map as I go. I know it's possible so I just want to make sure I have the gist of it down. The map thus far would be playable. Oh, and I am using RunUO. Anyway, I go into the game and say build a church. Add decoration etc. I believe I typed "[freeze" to make it all static. Now, if I add NPC's and other items that are useable, how do I make them stay if I want to update the map? And would there be much of a problem by updating it as I go?
I probably didn't make much sense but I'm trying to learn as I go :(

First, it sounds like you have a good game plan as far as what you want to do. Unfortunetly, I can't be of much assistance, as 1: I don't use MSPaint and only use Photoshop for map making. and 2: I'm not familiar enough with RunUO to help with the script aspects of it. Also, I'm primarily just a map builder and haven't even built that much in-game (I copy and move more often), and the bit I have done, I use UOX to build with.

For the NPCs staying around, it's not really related to the map at all. Provided you don't completly move the town to a new location on the map, your NPCs will still be there. If you do need to move the town on the map, you'll have to move the NPCs from the old location to the new location, I'm by far not an expert on RunUO so I think you might find better assistance at the RunUO website for specific issues on this.

For specific MSPaint questions, hopefully Melody J will reply with answers. She's the resident expert on that aspect. (You there Melody?)

Hopefully this should get you started.

Yup, I'm here Ryandor!

As a new map maker, MSPaint sounds like a good beginner. (If you eventually get into mapmaking, you might want to step up to Photoshop.)

Listen to Ryandor.....LOL! I think you will do fine with what your talking about.....and I believe your npc's will be fine.....however, best to dbl check the RunUO website to make sure about your npcs. (If there is an chars.wsc you may be able to find your npc and copy it to notepad or ms word to make a backup--Any comments on this from anyone?)

good luck!

As for your RunUO question. Yes to make any building static you would use the [freeze command, it will freeze only static tiles so it won't freeze your doors making them useless. As for your NPCs as long as you save they will remain at the coordinates you saved them at so as long as you don't make any drastic changes to your map when you replace your map file you won't have any problems with them. Just make sure you don't put an ocean were a town used to be if you don't want a bunch of floaters

Yeah, thanks for the responses...

Sadly though, RunUO doesn't like my router (or vice versa) and I'm unable to host the server. The only reason me or the makers of RunUO could scrounge up is that my router is filtering packets (even though it says it isn't)...

Go figure.

Anyway, the current release of UOX doesn't work with the latest UO client (or so I read) so I'm waiting on them to fix that as I'll try that next. If that doesn't work at least I can blame my router for sure.

Was planning on buying a Cisco 831 router but just lost my job... :(

No money, life's shit...heh
