Post subject:  Children?

In another thread, Dev mentioned that UO used to have children? Or, perhaps, he said they had the graphics but they were never implemented? *kicks bad memory*

Do such graphics exist anywhere? I'd love to put kids on my shard, but creating the bazillion different animations would be a killer.

Thanks for any replies,

The children graphics have been hovering around the internet for quite a few years. For quite a while, it was standard practice to patch them into your verdata, I believe.

Don?t get your hopes up too much, though ? they are not like the ?grown up? human at all ? there is only (I believe) one boy, one girl, and they are pre-clothed/haired, with no alterations. Not a lot of variety.

Ah. So, if I wanted variety I'd still have to create various outfits and such and all the animations to go with those....plus different hairstyles and -their- animations....etc..

*sigh* oh, well. Maybe when I've got hours of free time... lol

Thanks for the answer, though. :)

Yeah ? I do not know why Dev thought it would be so easy to make them into dwarves.

It might be relatively easy to ?shorten? all of the human graphics, though ? literally just resize them to something smaller. It might not work for children, but it would work for some other race (skinny dwarves?), and it would be straightforward to do.

That would entail some gump work as well. It also would require a duplication for any art that you want to be aviable for the smaller creatures (so a pair of paints, you would require 2, and only one would work on the smaller one, and the other on the larger one). Otherwise the paper doll and animation offset would be incorrect. If the hand positions changed, same with every weapon.

So a lot of work, even if straightforward.

Yeah, but it still saves an enormous amount of work compared to making it all from scratch. On the issue of pants? I do not think that a smaller race should wear a larger one?s pants, anyway.

Weapons, on the other hand, should probably be portable between them ? you would need two sets of graphics for each weapon, but a little scripting could alternate between the two, based on context.

All in all, probably not worth the effort.

Paperdoll is a deed of a day, i believe. Some resize, edit and face restyle for more cute view and all. Animation may be created in a way of resizing both body and cloth animations. Lets says that we make 6 animations - 3 for boy and 3 for girl, with different colors and wear types. Take normal body frame, normal cloth frame and place them into one frame. Then resize them. It take work with every frame of course, but it is not a hard work at all...

Just time-consuming. Very time-consuming.

Post subject:

yep. But the most time-consuming activity is a Life. Can you to object that?
If looking at every activity in it time-draining option, you can to lock yourself in a big crate and sitting there for the end of life, to not consume your time by ThAt DaMnEd AcTiViTiEs!!! The most expensive thing in a life is not a time, but a deeds that have finished in that time. So, if you really want to input childrens into your server, you will not be greedly for a time you spend at it.

Given the amount of time you have in life, though, are there not better ways to spend it? That, of course, depends on the person. Some people might value having children in their server more than they would value whatever else they could have done during that time.

That's a point. Some people will better read a book or make other busyness, but We are fellows, who Like to spend Our time to make players of Our servers more comfortable play-time without only abult NPCs in a whole world, that looks very odd from a side...

Actually it would be very easy to convert them into "nudes" to use as dwarves.

The clothing and equipment would be the pain in the butt part but really isnt all that bad. You can adjust the size and location of the other bmp cloth and weapons and the animations would follow the same ratios. This is how I made the baby dragons and how they made the dwarf animations and gear for the French shards.

It is very time consuming even doing it by batch processing, I had a macro I used for mine but they all work the same.

If you can find an original UO CD there is more than just the children that was removed from the game. The beekeepers hat was a favorite of mine when the game first came out. It was the only way to hide your face originally without wearing a helmet. They had a "Up" graphic for the netting and on double clicking it had a "Down" graphic. They still have the ground static in the current files.

There's one thing that's easier to do in the "3D" clients than the 2D ones, at least. Dwarves/Dwarfs (pick one). Just resize in models.txt, and all equipment automatically resizes with the model.... wee...

Shamely, i still haven't a good metal crap that can handle the 3D client...

You can make toilets. *grin* They are easy to make.

Take a sitable fallen log and set it on the ground at -1 z. Put a dishing stump hued to your desired color on top of the log and Bob's yer Uncle-one toilet.

Some people might value having children in their server more than caring for their real life children.

Of course, such people would also be pretty sad and pathetic. :)

 Yeah, that's just brilliant. It's already bad enough that the wilderness looks like suburbia. We would have suburbia with shitters everywhere.

Besides overdoing the realism bit, there is limited space already. Figuring that a tile is somewhere between 3-5' square the world really isn't all that big. More clutter would just be more of an eyesore.

As for the children, again it is more uneeded realism. The reason UO took them out is because they took a ton of flak over the fact that you could kill the children. The screwed up selective moral system that most of my fellow Americans adhere to finds it extremely abhorrent to kill children no matter what the circumstances, even in a game where you can be a murdering stealing necromancer and noone thinks any worse of you. Some modders for Morrowind added in children and someone on the Elderscrolls forums asked if you could kill them and the thread was eventually locked by the (limp-wristed, overly sensitive, politically correct, cocksucking) moderators, but not until after much flaming of the people who played evil child stabbing mother eating father raping sorts of characters.

Shit, think of the hell that Rockstar took over San Andreas. Was it because you portray a gangbanging, car-jacking, copkilling hoodlum? No. It was because of a little mod that opened up some really cheesy (my wife and I thought they were pretty comical) :gasp: sex scenes. Actually after a while it got to be a bore and a chore and a waster of time that I could have been out doing drive bys or stealing fancy sportscars. But this my friends, was major news! How pathetic is that?

Sometimes more realism is not such a good thing....

Why their server must actually tolerate children killing? Make them invincible (immortal), and that all. Gh... they always found cause to not make additional work...

I see nothing wrong with chopping virtual children into tiny little bits, and more so, I think anybody who has moral qualms with the symbolism of such a silly act should not be subjecting their easily suggestible minds to such games, anyway. I bet those same people are the types who are afraid of being around gay people, for fear they might turn gay.
