If having players is the primary motivational factor behind your intent to develop a shard, and you do not already have said players loyal to you, then it would be folly for you to contemplate the endeavor. To answer your question, the population of UO players is high, but many of those players are either very loyal to servers they are already playing on, or are too busy making servers of their own. Some of the European communities boast of very high player numbers, but in the western world, all we have to boast about is a very high number of servers. |

Oh don't worry, old one-eye is just pessimistic =) A good many of the "good" non-kiddie shards go down often enough, and most of the best ones aren't really all that great. Get yourself well known and you'll get a few players, and if what you offer is unique and worth trying you'll get a solid playerbase. But I wouldn't expect more than ~40 regulars and 10-20 people online at a time on a good night. There just aren't -that- many people left that spend a lot of time playing on shards. But if you aren't willing to put in a ton of work making a unique world with plenty of reasons to play in, I wouldn't bother starting it. |

Well, with me creating my shard the only thing I have in mind is myself. Im not creating a shard for everyone else Im creating my own little world that I can escape to whenever I want. It just makes the shard that much better in the end if the person who designed it truly enjoyed what he was doing. ![]() My advice is do it for yourself and you'll have something to be proud of more then a huge playerbase. |

Quality over quantity. =) Five awesome players are better than 20 script-kiddies. But I still say one needs to be prepared to do an awful lot of work even if it's for themselves more than anything. ![]() |

i love questions like this one. I have had upto 22 people actively on board with me meaning 22 players all day long (not all the same all 24 hours) I am currently down to 1-3 because of some staffing issues and unfortunatly they split yet again into another "I can do it better" shard. SO that being said, I am redoing my shard from near scratch to rid myself of the stench that is called script bugs and mapping problems. At 3 people playing it is worth my time and my energy because I am a firm believer that "If you make it, they will come". Just my two cents ![]() |

well, keep at it. If i had time, I would create the most badass runuo server known to man - but, life is more important, hah. |

Well I use RUNUO while I'm waiting on Syds new EMU *wink* but seeing as there are only 5 members of the EMU community left and they all have their own shards it really doesnt matter since I'm the only one to play on it. ![]() Dev |

I am interested in getting back into uo. But i want to do it right. I dont want to get myself involved with so much and overwhelm myself. I want to take it step by step. What do you guys suggest? |

Picking an EMU would depend a great deal on what you want out of the game. If your looking for up to date compatability then RUNUO is pretty much your only choice for a stable server. RUNUO is not even close to being a complete server though so you should be willing to do scripting in C# to make up the difference. If your looking for function then POL is pretty much your main choice but it does not support all the latest features so you would need to do a whole lot of scripting/editing to get it to work with all the latest stuff. Sphere...I think they are still alive but they suck after destroying the EMU and 55i is just not up to date or stable enough for a full time player base. The other EMU's such as Wolfpack, Lone Wolf, UOX3 I have not used lately so I have no clue about those. You will just need to read up on each and figure it out for your self. Dev |

You know, if I actually had an emu, I might actually be popular by now with all of Dev?s advertisements. Anyway? UOX is still being actively developed by a small number of people (I believe giwo is the only real programmer writing any significant amount of code, but I think punt is contributed a lot too) with Xuri as the ?everything but code? guy over at uox3.org ? long story short, it needs attention ? could be a good emu, but not enough developers/testers at this point. They re-wrote just about every line of code, and cleaned it up considerably. As for the derivatives, I hear they did much the same, and are much more stable as well. |
