The first trick you should learn is drawing out the design on graph paper, this is the only way your going to have any idea how many tiles your end creation is going to cover.
Second trick is to look at every image in the veradata.mul front and back. while it might look like they have the same wall or door shown more than once its actually because they have versions in different locations in the tiles theirself.
One door might be located at the bottom right of the tile while another might be located at the upper right of the tile, they match the wall sections that do the same thing. Learning which tile to place can be fun in itself and its highly recommended that you use a visual aided tool like "The Box" or "Axis" so you can actually see what your placing.
Third trick is to get really good at blending the water tiles back together after you erase everything and start over!
