I was intrested in making/modding my own UO shard/world. I've been looking at different sites, but I don't get it at all. Could anyone give me links, or try to explane the basics to me? Like, when people talk about 'maps' are they refering to the UO worlds? |

Yup. When people are talking about maps, that's exactly what we're referring to, the world your character sees and moves about on. As far as your other questions go, you're gonna want a server first off. As for other pages on modifying UO, well, there's honestly not much out there at the moment. But many of the people on this board, including myself, hope to change this soon. I'm working on a site that will basicly go through the A-Z's of modifying UO, with tutorials and helpful links. Sorry I couldn't be more informative. If you have a specific question about something go ahead and ask though. People here are more than happy to help. But for starters, grap a server, then get yourself Dragon (you can get the latter from this very website), and start reading tutorials. You'll be surprised how easy it is to catch on. ![]() |

I suggest reading up alot on everything you can find. Do you know any scripting languages? If you know C# you're already on a good way to get to know RunUO. Else I really suggest sphere (Don't try Sphere 1.0, go for Sphere Revisions) as sphere is the easiest. And in my opinion also a really good one. There's many sites with scripting help, and unfortunatly I don't have them bookmarked x.x. Im the useless mapmaker of my shard, so that's not helping anything. Ryandor.com can help out with everything for mapmaking. RunUO: www.runuo.com Spherserver: www.sphereserver.net There's a few others, but I don't advise you to use them. POL is good, but really confusing. |

Sphere 1.0 is finally out? Is it every bit as wretched as the 99 series? Everytime I hear you and Rose say "well, Sphere is good if you use the 55i improved versions, but stay away from anything newer" it reminds me of the biggest reason I left Sphere behind; it has no future. I would recommend RunUO for sure to anyone new. If you don't know C# then learn it. Start small with your custom scripting. Download scripts that other people have made, try them out, see what they do, tinker with them to make them do what you want, learn how to write your own from scratch. I can see the argument of staying with Sphere because you already have a lot of time invested in systems that work for you, but I can't see advising it for a noob. Yes, it is easy. Until you want to do advanced things with it, and then you need to invest time learning how to make scripts that do what you want. RunUO is also easy right out of the box. Yes, you also need to learn the scripting language, but because it is a real programming language there are also already utilitys out there to help. Orbsydia's tools that are in development are built from the groundup with RunUO in mind as well. Anyway that's my 2? worth. You should of course look at them all and decide for yourself. Besides RunUO and Sphere, there are also POL and UOX (and since UOX is opensource there are many flavors of it, kinda like Linux). http://www.polserver.com/ I don't know for the life of me where UOX's homepage is. I see uox3.com is still owned by Ryan; hence it goes to RunUO (which is not a UOX spinnoff). |

The other thing I'd recommend for any beginner is to check out the inspiring work of others, posted as screenshots on Ryandor's site: http://www.ryandor.com/shots.shtml Inspiring, but humbling at the same time! |
