Post subject:  Language

I was just thinking about how many people are not native to english in these forums, and they all say they are sorry for their bad english. But if we as 'Natural Enlgish Speakers' goto say a german website we expect them to have a "english support page."

Shows how arrogant we are :( Good job all of you other language speakers, everyone's english is good! not perfect, but who cares? Im from the US and my english sucks

Warum lernen Sie Deutsch nicht? (Ich bedauere mein schlechtes Deutsch, es nicht meine erste Sprache)

Not really. English is known to be a main language to everything. Basically, it's the most widely used language and most people who are online have english as a second language. Would be too annoying if you had to learn a language every time you wanted to get a little piece of info :p

Next to that, ALOT of german people can't read or type english very well. I think that's arrogant, as for almost every online game I've played so far, there's a special german server. Drachenfells on UO I think.

Next to that, they refuse to speak any other language besides french in france most of the time, so communicating there is horrid. :D

What really bugs me is when people use automatic translators. Those things don't work! Stop using them! Your horrible and broken english will make more sense than what the translator puts out. (Example of crap spewed out by translator: <DoD_Mutilador> the following one happens! I add beatle in shard and subonele when desco I of it it add!) (Example of horrible and broken, yet better, english: <DoD_Mutilador> hehehe sorry my translator very sux)

eaither way i do agree translators do suck, but ya know i only noticed it when i went to london then came back. After you're out of the US for a while and come back perspectives change.

hum. it's my fifth year with englsih lessons and i still have a lot of problems. it takes me much more time to write some short posts here than in german forums, though i have great grades in english. the problem is, that schools don't really teach you to speak and write english on the fly. you do a lot of useless exercises as putting in commas or right tenses and so on.

I don't think the general approach to teaching foreign languages, at least here in the US, is the best that could be used. At least not for many people - Maybe some people need to learn punctuation, spelling, and grammar rules and memorize them in order to write, but most of us (Me anyhow, and I'm assuming that many other people are the same - You may think that's arrogant, but I'm assuming this because apparently it's more arrogant to assume that something you can do is NOT common) only need to hear it, read it, and use it with other people that use it, in order to internalize it, to learn it subconsciously, so we can speak, write, etc, without having to look up rules or think about them. Actually, this is how we all learned our first language anyhow, though there are people who are native speakers but are really really bad at using the language. But I suppose that's why we have classes about our native language (That is, english here in the US) in school too. And why they go over the same stuff every year until 10th grade or so. :P

So I suppose what I'm saying is, don't rely on the rules they teach so much, and instead just read a lot in english, preferably actual books, since they're much better at using the language correctly than people online are. If you're lucky, you'll pick up the language pretty well, and won't have to do much memorizing either. And even if you aren't talking completely right as a result (I know I'm not - you aren't supposed to start a sentence with and, for instance), you're talking colloquially anyhow, and will be understood. :P

your english is a 1000 times better than half of america's. for the comma thing, do what an english teacher told me back in elementary school: insert one everytime you pause or take a breath in your sentence :)

lol  that's awsome.

Xelah is right, it's just breaks in sentences or joining two sentences for instace.

2 sentences:

bob is retarded
bob rides in a wheelchair

a sentence can take these two and make :

Bob is retarded, and he rides in a wheelchair.

Apparently I took breaths at appropriate times then. I was an honors/A+ English student throughout my entire school life.
