What does the UO community seem really into these days? PVP? Pvm? RP?

Its the same like in other online games. Do you want lots of players? So make game easy, with easy gaining of rares, money, wealth, make lots of items newbie and forbid PK...

Do you want good game? Dont do anything mentioned above.

I also agree with demostenes. It's hard to find a decent playerbase in anything. Basically, if you go RP you have to deal with people who *think* they can RP, but in fact do anything except it and you have to watch out for that. Claiming to be an RP shard with that kind of players can be pretty much your downfall if you don't watch out.

As for PK, I think it would be easiest to start a PK shard, but I also think it would be less fun. What I've seen on PK shards is that people macro all day until they reached their top levels, go hunt for some good items, get them blessed (if it's possible) and run around killing random (mostly new) players.

It's just a matter of personal preference. But don't try to combine those two unless you are completely sure of what you're doing.

If you want solid player base, dont specialize shard on anytning. Make shard "universal" and as GM support all kinds of play, so each player can choose.
Pure RP shards (or PvP etc) have problems with sufficient number of players (imho for good play you need 60+ playes online) unless they are international and famous. In my country every pure shard ended very quickly, because there was no "recruit" of new players from newbies which havent decided yet which kind of play they prefer, so they came to unspecialized shards, and stood there. A old playes left and no new came....
