Post subject:  Tutorial not clear on how to use magic wand to subtract area

"Now, with the magic wand, subtract the areas that are part of the hill"

Except this isnt working at all. Tried it with contiguous unchecked and tolarance at 0. I was holding alt. Tried it all sorts of ways its just not working right. Either the center hill only get highlighted the third to the outside gets highlighted or every part on the island except the hill gets highlighted. (thats if i set tolerance above 46)

So how do I use the magic want to subtract from highlighted areas?

The only thing I can think of is if you have multiple layers in the bmp. You shouldn't but some people use it to manage the bmp. (I don't and I don't recommend it). If you do have multiple layers, make sure you are using the right layer. If you're not, then just ignore this whole paragraph.

I'm really not sure what the problem is, as I just checked it by following my own instructions and it worked.

The tolerance should be set to 0. Basically that's how Photoshop determines what to select based on "nearest" color.

When you hold the alt key, does the wand symbol have a little minus sign next to it (the mouse cursor)?

what version of Photoshop are you using?

Hmm well ps7 tolerance 0 holding alt key indexed mode so no layers.

It seems to be somewhat working now though I dont think I did anything different. Still have a bit of trouble sometimes getting the right layer selected or deselected.

I don?t know if it?s a help to you or not, but I?ve found a really good way to use the wand. This way saves hours of work re-painting the map by hand.

If you want to work in a small area, say on an island, and not touch the rest of the world try this.

Lets say you want to change the forest on an island to a jungle.

1) Use the lasso tool to roughly circle the island. Now everything you do next will only affect the area inside that selected area. Have it set to the 1st or 2nd setting on the tool bar (?new selection? or ?add to selection?) It doesn?t matter which at this point.
2) Take the wand. Have it set to the last setting. ( Intersect with selection)
3) Touch the wand to the forest color inside the lasso area.
4) All the color that you selected within that lasso area is now selected. And NOT the whole map.

Of coarse this can be used in many different areas. Around mountains, forests, swamps, water. Anywhere you need to select a color in an area but not that color everywhere on the map.

Hope it helps
:)
