Has anyone successfully created a DIFF file using Punt's DIFF and MERGE utilities? The map DIFF files seem to come out ok, but my statics DIFF file comes out to over 600 megs, and of course the client can't even read it! This from a custom statics file only 21 megs large (and probably only 1 or fewer megs different from the original!)

Anyone?

I'd like to use the normal UO map for Felucca and a custom map for Trammel...but unless I can get these utilities working correctly, I doubt that it will be possible.

Never even heard of the utilities you speak of.

They allow you to create your own DIFF files, or merge DIFF files into the main map.

Would you please explain this diff file business.

The newer clients use DIFF files as mini-patches to the map. That's how they can have Ocllo on one facet and Haven on another. Haven is located in the DIFF file that is used for the Trammel facet.

I thought the map1.mul was used for those extended maps.

There is no map1.mul.

map0.mul is for the Britannia map (Felucca and Trammel).
map2.mul is for Ilshenar.
map3.mul is for Malas.

mapdif0.mul contains Trammel specific changes, mapdif1.mul contains patches for Ilshenar, mapdif2.mul contains patches for Malas. (Or at least Im pretty sure thats how it goes).

Theoretically, if you can create the dif files, that would allow you to have a whole seperate map on any emulator that supports facets. So you could have a Britannia map, a second custom map, Ilshenar, and Malas.

These are the only tools I know of that allow you to create the DIFF files. The problem I have had is that when it creates the STATIC DIFF files, it creates this monstrous, unusable file instead of a valid DIFF file.

Maybe that's because OSI just patches in small things such as buildings using diff files while you patch whole worlds?

Why would you need to do it with a diff files? Couldnt you just place it directly in said files? Like to have a custom Ilshenar map just edit map2.mul like one does to have a custom map0.mul?

Yea but if there is open space in the map why waste it :P

You're missing the point.

I want to use the Britannia map as Felucca.

I want to use a CUSTOM map as Trammel.

There is no map1.mul to do that with. The only way to do that is to put all the changes into the DIFF files that handle Trammel.

Thats what I am trying to do.

Another benefit is, if I can figure out how to create the DIFF files, I can distribute my maps as small DIFF files instead of having to distribute the entire Map0.mul, which is a pretty huge file.

All I know about this, there's no Emu (Sphere, POL, etc.) that works with the other mapfiles like map2.mul.
They only handle the map0.mul, so you have to copy everything into this one.

Wrong - RunUO supports all of them.

Sphere supports map0.mul, map2.mul, map3.mul and all the diff files.

I have all the files from Punts site, let me know if you still need a copy and I'll upload them and host them from mine. Check Obsydia's site since Punts working there now as well.

Yes I have, I am creating a custom map and I wanted the Solen hives :) I got them in and they seem to work great, I even got the Static tiles from a *.wsc file that was created from the proggies into the map, I had to rework a *.cs file someone else wrote for importing static but I got them in. I run RunUo 1.0 RC0

Post subject:  been thier done that

i went and made a total different custom tram using the diff files just one word on this

DONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The file will be HUGE!!! it will also take all your players forever to down load. and if your NOT running a 2 prossesor RISK server you will be at lag heaven with the server trying to constantly process the dif file.

best off to use ilsh or malas or if your patient wait till the expantion comes out then they will have to update the client to use Map04 hehehe

but it can be done but its not worth wasting your time
