hi everybody out there first of all i want to thank everbody in this com for this awesome page/forum, especially ryandor for his formidable tutorials, and last but not least for giving us this platform around map-making thanks! ![]() well, although i read almost everything related to map making, i'm very new in this "business" sure i have got really big success in basic work and stuff but now i'm having some trouble i can't deal with since most of the screenshots posted here in other topics are often down or not available anymore, i couldn't really find a help with the search because i'm not sure if these are exactly the same probs i have i'm sure some of this problems were discussed earlier before, but don't don't flame on me please ![]() ok, lets stick to the errors: 1. lava-tiles i use + photoshop7 with the labelled pallette, which i downloaded on this site + ryandor's mod 9 for compiling i tried several times, but always the same have a look at this screen here i don't have a clue whats this tile anyway, never saw it before in 3 years of uo, it not even has a name in sphere (by klicking on it) anyway, it seems that the color used with the pallette is not known to the dragon-scripts, since i tried different altitudes for lava and nothing else resulted than this strange tile at one level anyone has an idea? 2. edges i drawed very smooth lines, as is was recommended in the tuts but strangely...on some directions it looks very funny what dragon made out of it its always the north-western/western corner i think you can have a look at some rocks here and here same with some grass/dirt->water egdes, shown here an here don't think it's the way it should be, or not? ok, thats it first thank you in advance for your help bye (note: please don't look at the language, i'm not a native one ;( ) |

First, the noname tile is desert way. It's used for roads in the desert. It's not actually very useful if you ask me. double-check the color that your using. Jeep in mind that there's still problems with the lava transition as well, and it still needs fixing. Second, the problem with your mountains is that you are making them too steep I think. You just can't see the edges since they are hidden below the "edge" of the top of the mountain. What z are you using? The best effect is a gradual increase from the edge of the grass like 5,10,25,30,50,etc as you work your way up. Third, with the dirt to water, it's a hard transition to get correct, combined with the fact it's not a very good transition anyway. Try to make it smoother and use only dirt 0 (if your not) and see if it helps. I had problems with this transition in the past and I think it needs fixing. Hope this helps. Ryandor |

1. ahh, ok...i checked the color back again, maybe i try another colortab later an it works out better with lava...it was just strange that there was NO lava-tile at all... but if this doesn't work out still i'm just patient and later looking for the new mods ![]() 2. mmhhh....ok i'll try this out too my problem with that was just, that i can't build very high mountains in every single point no problem with normal ones, since they are usually higher than rock 20 i used in this screenshots but if you want ...uhh...lets say some kind of a maze or something like that in the mountains, you actually can't go too high with that, because the chars sprite would dissapear to much behind them (especially annoying with looting your corpses/monsters corpse) but i think your right, i will experiment a little bit with the other altitudes, to cover ist up a little bit *hope it works* 3. okay i have another screenshot, exactly the position i were with the shots in the first post ![]() do you think its not smooth enough? well, i tried already different altitudes there too.... first screen was water -5 and dirt 0 now the dirt is 20 and the water 15 the result ist much the same, so i think it isn't a z-problem i ALWAYS used a difference between them at z 5, which shouldn't be a problem at all, right? maybe this helps you fixing it later in some way ![]() |

For mazes in the mountains, what I do is I raise the level of the walkable parts. This way I can maintain consistant mountains on the whole map (since that is one of the first things I do). This way you aviod the hidden corpse problem while not worrying about the height of the mountains. Yes, you need to smooth out the coastline in there. Something like this: ![]() -Ryandor |
