 Post subject: Is it possible?
PostPosted: Tue Jun 21, 2005 8:42 pm
I've looked through the forums...its probably already addressed on another thread but im blind and can't find it :(

Well my question is, I want to make a map and I was wondering is there anyway possible to have the lowest point for like the water be about -115 like in Malas, and still build up to the positive hundreds? The idea I have for my map is something were I can have "magical" cities that fly...but are up in the 60-100s in Z. While the ground and mountins are well under 50 Z below it? Also make it with Fel rules?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, also if this has been answeared before could anyone please send me to the thread

thanks for any help!!!

Floating cities are very possible but cause graphical problems, you can see what happens by going into Yew Crypts and viewing the ghost objects above your locations as well as the NPC names.

The higher the elevation gap the worse the lag and graphics trouble this will produce which is why OSI decided against placing the dungeons actually under the map proper.

I would recommend placing the cities in the dungeon region of the map hovering over a section of map that players would not be able to use, this would provide the illusion of a floating city above the map while keeping the main map clean and elevation would no longer provide a problem.

Floating cities are bad for a number of reasons due to the way the client works. Firstly, you would be able to see the cities from the ground if you are not directly under them, and they would block your view for a very long distance before you are under them. Also, the client loads items based on X and Y location, not visibility, so it would lag players immensely even when they can not see the cities.
