I've got a pretty decent map coming along (based on FFIV), and I'm about to start adding cities. I'm going to add the roads to the map file, then start adding statics (buildings, benches, etc.) I've been really careful to get the terrain as near to flawless as I can, but it's not feasible to run over every square of the map to check it out before moving on. The question is, how much "play" do I have to come back and fix stuff once I start adding my cities? If I find a place where I screwed up a transition, do I have to give up days of work on cities to fix it, or can I change just that small area and recompile the map file without worrying about the statics?

this is a personal opinion on what do do at this point, and I am sure that different people will give you different suggestions at this point. Fot the smaller transition fixes and edits I use Worldforge, It uses the map your using and just overwrites it as you edit. Not good if you make major mistakes while using it, but nothing that can't be fixed. as far as the "point of no return" there really isnt one, just make sure if you have anyone using that map for other building projects, they stay up tp date with your current as well.

The other option is to recompile, then use worldcopy to take just that area from the new compile and paste it into the old.
If you are using mod11 you can also always do a map2bmp on it and recompile that.
If you have made a lot of changes to statics (i.e. buildings) then don't run dragonsp again after the compile.
It really depends what you are changing I guess. For most small details WF is still your best bet.
