Post subject:  Mod 11 Colortable and Photoshop

I've run into a strange problem using the Mod11 colortable and Photoshop 5.5. I think it's a problem with my photoshop settings rather then the colortable, but hopefully someone can help me.

I've noticed that there seems to be no difference between different alttitudes of some colors. For instance, while doing a mountain, 45, 50, and 55 all appear to be the same color - that is, I don't see a difference when I draw using 50 on an area that is 45. With only indexed color, I should be able to see a visible difference, shouldn't I? But even the magic wand tool treats them as the same color. Anyone else run into this before?

Well, if you are in Index mode, make sure you have the color table loaded. IMAGE>MODE>INDEXED COLOR then PALETTE>CUSTOM, LOAD>DRAGON-MOD11.ACO (It's in the addon directory).

When you are using the wand tool, check your tolerance and set it to 1. Tolerance should be setable (is that a word?) just below the menu line.

The actual color values for the mountains are very close to each other, so when you are viewing the colors, there is very little difference.

I was in index mode, the colortable was loaded, and the tolerance on the magic wand was set to 0. Just changed it to one and tried, no differance.

The effect is also on the water tiles, 15 and 25 appear to be the same, at least to my eye and every tool in photoshop.

I know something is wrong here, altitudes are severly messed up. My mountains don't look high at all, even when using 70 or even 80. When I tele on to them and get my z level, It's only around 30 or so - on the areas I painted with level 70.

A problem I think is related, colors on the colortable arn't producing the desired terrain. Lava is cobblestone, or maybe sandstone paving stones, I'm not sure - just not lava. Dirt is grey paving stones, Starfield is the road terrain used in britain, and forest is cave floor. Now, the parts of the map not yet converted to mod 11 colors (ie, the ones with the mod 9 colors) turn out fine - yet I'm using the mod 11 scripts with dragon. I know this because I deleted my entire dragon folder and replaced it with the mod 11 one. I'm sorely confused here.... On the up side, coasts look good!

I've been using Mod9+, which seems to work fine for me.

Make sure the RGB values of each color on the table actually correspond to the colors on the image provided.

Use the eyedropper tool to grab the RGB values of each of the colors. If they come up the same, the color table might be corrupted.

Are you SURE your image is set to use the right colortable? This is seperate from what swatch set you are using to paint with. I use photoshop 6.1 myself and it was what I used to make the mod so I am positive it is compatible. You won't believe how many times I hear this problem and that is all it is. If your results vary widely from what the colors you are using to paint with say then chances are this is your problem.

Go to Image-Mode-Color Table.
If you see something that doesn't look like your swatches then you've got the wrong ones. If you see something similar but you've got this problem, you should reload them anyway.
Click LOAD
Select files of type "ACO"
Browse to the mod11.aco and select it.
Hit OK
Save your image.
Try Dragon again.

*sigh* Stormcrow, your a bloody genuis. The swatches were Mod 11 but the colortable was mod 9. To be fair, I had no idea that the colortable and swatches were seperate - Load the new swatches and that was that, as far as I knew. Thank you for the help :)

Edit: Fixed the alttitude problem as well. Is the fact that colortable != swatches mentioned in a tutorial or faq anywhere? I don't remember seeing it. But then, I havn't read very many, maybe I should :P

Aside from a few posts on this site, I guess it really isn't mentioned. Tutorials are sadly lacking. I was really hoping Ryandor would write a new one for mod11 *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge* say no more.
