Alright, I am finally to the point of wanting to make caves. Here is where I ran into trouble. I read the tutorial that is in the guides link.

When creating the dungeon, what z level does the cave floor need to be at? My entrance starts at 20. So I added the cave floor at 20. In the game, the z leel of the entrance appears to be at 200,200,-5 (even though it was painted at 20) and in the cave its 205,230,20 (painted at 20 because that was what was close. Any ideas?

I assure you the cave opening itself is at z 20 although the ground right next to the cave opening is probably as you said -5. Why you would have ground at -5 I don't know, or how you got the ground to -5 I'm not quite sure either. Does the Dragon colortable even have a z -5 for any tile other than water :?:

I can't really understand what the hell you are trying to say except the first part of your question, the answer to which is the cave floor MUST be at least 20 Z BELOW the Z of the cave entrance in order for players to be able to walk through. Mounted players may need a higher cave entrance depending on your emu (and maybe you don't want to let mounts through anyway).

Okay, let me see if I can clarify.

I painted the map, using dragon mod 9. Going from just painting (not using worldforge yet), when I log in and check the z level where my entrance is going to be, I am at Z20.

So I added the cave floor and the black space around it at Z20. Black is actually at Z0.

I log back in and check. The cave is a Z20, and the area for the entrance is at Z20. Looks good.

I go back into dragon. Paint the cave entrance. Log back in. Still all at Z20.

Go into worldforge, add the mountain tops, cave sides, make sure Z levels match, etc.

Log back in. The cave entrance is now at -5. The cave is at 20. Worldforge shows the z level at 20.

I guess I am just confused.

Okay, a few things. I am assuming you are following Ry's technique in the tutorial. If you don't follow it closely, your caves will not be there.

Second I still not sure about which area exactly you are talking about when you talk about your Z level but a few pointers:
Your cave Z level should be at the same Z level as the dirt around your cave entrance. The Z level of the cave entrance itself should be 20-40 Z higher than that. The Z level of the mountains should also of course be no less than 20 Z higher and I would recommend no less than 40 and as high as the surrounding mountain range to make it look right.

The cave entrance scripts could use some work but I think in the end for Mod 10 what we will do (if I can talk Ry into it) is just use a single color for each cave entrance type (black and clear) and require tweaking by hand in Worldforge.

What I want to know is how are you figuring out the z level of your cave entrance (Not the tiles in front of it) in game.

it seems the problem is when you useing world fordge. When you paint/add in the montain tiles (the roof). Make shure you have the z to atleast 40 (20 hier than the floor). If you dont set the z then you will just paint right over the cave floor.

Then pic the random mountain tile and eaither set the z to add 20 or have it say "set z 40" or hier.

About youre intance, it the same problem. use the grid lines and the #'s you will see what z youre placeing your tiles and where.
