<long string of expletives> Worldforge stopped working on me the other day. While I have heard rumors of it not working with XP, I have been running custom worldforge 6.4 on XP for the last 9 months with no problems at all. I've been using it heavily recently since I've been gutting tranlation tables. 2 days ago it just suddenly refused to work. It just comes up with an error and closes. I reinstalled it and still the same.

"Event id: 1000 Source: Application Error
Faulting application worldforge.exe, version 6.4.1.1, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.1106, fault address 0x00013887.

Anyone have any ideas or workarounds? Dualbooting is not feasible for me and I don't have another high-end workstation around to install a different OS on.

I have no idea what could be wrong, and it might be complete nonsense what I'm saying now. But if you rightclick on the exe there's a tab where you can chose the compatibility. You can select a previous windows OS there, maybe it'll work then. Though don't bet on it.

Well, it's saying something about kernel32. I know from working with linux that your kernel is extremely important, and from the sound of that error message (and this is just a hunch) worldforge is having some kind of problem with your kernel.

My friend has built custom kernels before (he's built his own customized version of linux) and he knows all about them. I'll try to get ahold of him sometime so I can post exactly what one does. But until then, a couple questions for you stormcrow.

Have you installed any recent ugrades from microsoft to windows? If not do you have automatic update set to download and install updates without your knowledge or approval. Thirdly have you installed any kind of services?

I'm just trying to figure out what could have happened that would have effected the .dll and if it's reversable. I don't know if there's anyway to reverse an update without using one of your windows backups, and then you could lose important work you've done. (Unless you back that up on some kind of removeable media) Sooooo... Yeah, I guess try and figure out what changed your kernel32.dll file, and then you should have your answer.

Ry pointed me to the link for a WinXP compatible WF executeable. It doesn't have all the features of the one I was using before (mainly I miss the clickable full worldmap), but at least it works. Anyone who needs it can get it here: http://www.uox3.org/files/wf64XPfix.zip

@Armada- I didn't expect it to work either, since I was working fine previously. I tryed it of course. Of course it didn't work.

@Nazgel- The kernel is extremely important in the Windows world as well; it is the core of any OS. I do auto download updates but I manually install them. I've thought about that as well but the only recent one was an MDAC update which wouldn't affect WF, since MDAC is for ODBC connections. I was playing with group policys on my DC though, and also changing directory structures, including the one where I run Worldforge from. While I keep archives of downloads for reinstall it is possible I goofed up mine and kept an earlier version instead of the later. It bugs me because I am still not sure what happened.

There's a non xp version that allows you to click on a map? Why was I never informed of this? But most importantly where can you get it? I was slightly upset with the zoom out feature of the new worldforge as it takes a horrendous amount of time to move around at any kind of distance that allows you to view anything.

It is Welf's custom 6.4 build, quite possibly the one Ry has for download. My archives are such a mess of different versions of one install or another and I don't always remember where I got a particular file from.
