when im in photoshop and and I choose forest and i use lasso to make circle around an island and over water and I choose the magic wand and go over water and click subtract from selection it pops up a box that says No pixels selected then undoes where I lasso'ed off whats wrong?

Well sounds like you made a layer and havent added anything in it and your trying to select somthing but nothing is in that layer.

Since you have layers that means you are in the wrong color mode. Before you get too far, make sure you change to indexed color. This will make sure you have the correct colors (provided you set the color table) and eliminate layers, which causes problems like you've experienced.
