How does making a custom map affect treasure hunting?

Good Question, although I'm not really sure.

I never really got into T-hunting, and am not sure how the t-maps are affected.
I do know that the world map (in game) can be changed with the cartograph program, but I don't know about the t-maps.

Maybe someone else knows?

That's a server-related question and almost solely depends on how the t-map system is implamented on that server.

I am interested in this too. Treasure hunting is a very important skill for many roleplayers out there. The problem I noticed is when I get on my custom map and use the cartography skill, I end up with maps of britain and vesper etc. I thought for a while the maps I was making were part of a world map that I could find in the gumps of insideUO, but I it wasn't there. Does anyone at least know what file it would be kept in?

Try reading the whole thread. :-)

As for how to fix the rest of the treasure-maps (besides the actual map), you'll have to change something server-side, but that solely depends on which server you're using, so I can't tell you how. Look in your server's documenation for assistance.
