Hi I'm Luchese and I'm new on this board.

I'm playing around with my personal shard for quiet some time now. Now I think it is time to build a custom map for it. And about this I have some questions to you veterans. :)

 Can I replace/create new textures for UO?
 In the original UO we can find a couple of worlds; tram, fel, ...
Can I add new worlds? (not replacing the old)

Thanks in advance!

you can make new textures and things for uo, you just need any sort of graphics program, i would recomend saving the images from insideuo or somthing so you have the exact dimensions and what not then use say very to put them in theres a tutorial in eh tutorial boards i think about it now

depending on your server i guess you can add new worlds but the client only reads up to map3 so if your other world is giong to be somthing other than that the client wont see it unless somthing changed i havnt been paying much attention latly

Well, technically speaking, you can do anything you want. It?s more a question of what is practical/easy to do.

New textures are relatively easy (compared to your second question). I?m assuming you mean ground tiles. I would do like DeadWorm said and save images from InsideUO to get the dimensions right. The thing that you have to be careful about is the fact that there are TWO images for every ground tile ? a flat 2D image for flat ground, and a 3D texture used on hills. They go in two separate files, too. You can either append them to the real files or do the verdata thing.

Adding more maps than the map3.mul is both impractical and unreasonable. If you manage to make a shard that uses all that land and then some, then you?ll be doing better than EA.

Most new builders are under the assumption that bigger is better. More land is more real. Which is very true, but the sad fact remains that a realistic sized world is just too much to manage on a player-ran shard.

Map0.mul is approximately 8 square miles. That?s not very big. Not only is it that small, but they manage to cram in deserts, jungles, forests, castles, dungeons, oceans, islands, and artic tundra all in that 8 square mile area. To a new mapper that seems silly (it did to me).

What it all comes down to, though, is playability. It *SEEMS* like more than 8sqr miles, which is what matters. You just have to learn to build maps so that they fool the players into believing they?re much bigger. Either that, or you can go ?real? and just create a small island, but that?s usually not as fun for the player.

The problem with a realistic sized map is that everybody is so far away from every-day interaction with everybody else that it?s crazy. You can?t SEE for a mile like you can in real life, you can only see your immediate surroundings, so even if there are a hundred players in your world, putting them in 8 square miles just disperses them far too thinly to make the game enjoyable.

What makes UO shine isn?t the size or complexity of the world (regardless of what EA seems to think), it?s the amount of interaction you have with other players. By interaction I mean bumping into people all the time without intending to. That leads to all the interesting and fun situations that made UO a best seller back when it was one world and 3 shards crammed to the brim with people.
