Hullo, I am new to this, but an old Photoshop nut so I am actually having a blast doing this. 8) I was wondering if anyone has a blank map0.mul of the osi version of UOMap Worldforge gives me an error when I try to clear the map for some reason.

Question: I have seen a few very nice shards out there with custom maps and am curious how you build your roads/buildings etc. I have template wizard and can cature the static/dynamic's and place them anywhere I want, but after generating the bmp in Photoshop and running it thru Dragon I dont see how to edit the map file to add walkways that seem to go right to the doors of buildings. So whats your trick? :) I am sure I can do it if I wanna spend a year drawing every little detail, but there must be an easier way.

Question: do the map files have to be called map0.mul staidx0.mul etc. can they be map25.mul etc? I dont want to overwrite my players map files with a patch and am not sure how the file naming sequence works.

Anyway, my apologese in advance for being a newb, but I am really glad I found this place, its the most fun I've had with UO in years!

Blank map files:
www.ryandor.com/xtra/blanks.zip (302K)

you can name them whatever you want, but in order to use them in with the client you'll need to name it map0.mul for a standard Brit sized map.
map2.mul is for Ilshner, map3 is Malas. The sizes are important though.

The way that I keep track of different maps is with directory names.
(thismap/map0.mul, thatmap/map0.mul, etc.)

There's nothing from stopping you from rerunning the map through Dragon again after figuring out where you need to put roads. Or you can tweak it in WorldForge.

Roads, paths, buildings and deco items are the last thing added to the map one trick is to lay everything out on graph paper to scale for building design or town layout, use Worldforge and edit it tile by tile. Aligning the buildings to the paths is rather simple this way because you actually draw the floor of the building onto the map thus ensuring it will be the proper size once completed. The original OSI maps are all done this way. I like to draw the major roads between cities or towns in Dragon using the 3-5 pixel brush then do the fine stuff the old fashioned way with Worldforge.

Hi everyone.. Im trying to make a whole custom map. I made a quick map using map0.mul for brit but new land mass shape and size. I loaded the map into the game but had a prob. All of brits houses and trees were still there. This is what id like to do. New land completly free of houses trees rocks items ect.... What do i do to accomplish this? Im using aos and have LBR and Third Dawn Available. Servers in use are uox3 and run uo. Also im using uo gateway. I have xuris world builder, dragon, world forge, and inside uo. Ive attempted to melt freeze unfreeze everyting and what is currently in tutorials on the net, nothing works for houses and trees. Plenty info on to add houses walls and trees but none to delete. when i melted i did a full melt. Yes I am willing to put the time into a large world and will be done right, Im a certified graphic artist and am currently learning game programing however slow. I Love uo and would like to understand the concepts in the actual game design a-z and maybe one day inc. it into my cretaion but something else with a bigger twist... plz help you can post but perferably send me the info and or both.... email is: macawsrus@hotmail.com

Try this... when you run the map thru Dragon then run SP which will place the statics (Tree's and buildings) but it will also ask if you would like to erase the old statics, just select yes.
You do not want to place every single tree on the map even with Worldbuilder (great for houses tho) you'll be there the rest of your life :)

You can run a blank map thru the Dragon process and then SP the blank to get blank Static files.

You should remove the Diff files from the UO folder or use the RUNUO script to keep it from reading them, its in the RUNUO Forums.

That should give you a clean slate to play with
