I have a problem with a new map I am working on. It seems that after I run it thru dragon, and log in some of the coastlines are messed up.
The ones along the top, top left of the screen are jagged like steps. There seems to be no transition between the grass and the water. All the rest of the coasts look fine, but those are messed up. I understand you can use worldforge to fix this, but I am unsure of what to do once in it.

In worldforge they look to be fine, there are transition tiles in place.
If I could figure out a way to post a screenshot I would, but unfortunately I have no way to host the pics.

Any ideas?

Or better yet can someone post what a working coastline looks like in world forge? preferably one fromt he top, topleft of the map? In other words if the top of the map faced north, it would be any northern coastline.

If you have your water at -5z and your land at 0z, all you can do is try and make your coast on those North/West edges a little smoother. Longer runs of north/south edges and less steps.

If you have a greater step in your heights than -5 z water and 0z land, then you have no hope at all of making those steps smoother so you can see the transition tiles..

sorry. nature of the beast!

Funny you should respond :) The area of the map I am haveing the most problem with is my main city, which I got the idea for from a screenshot of your map. The circular sections of water around the inner circles of the citty are troubleing me the most. It is the northern to southern as you mentioned. Have you any pointers from when you were working on the coastline of your city?

Thanks alot,
And yes the water is -5 and the grass is at 0.
I am almost tempted to scrap the entire city idea because of this, it is rather frustrateing. I have spent my entire vacation almost trying to fix it.

It's a limitation of the program that the coastlines generally look like shit (to be blunt).

One of the most valuable and most used skills a map maker/builder can have is the ability to stand back, look at the whole picture, and then trash it (or use the .nuke button) if he is not 100% satisfied with the results.
Goodness knows I?ve done it a thousand times. If I?m not happy with my work, and believe it to be the best thing I?ve ever seen, how can I expect others to be?
So its good you are willing to do the same.

As to you making a circle of water on your map, well.. I suppose they do say ?imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!? But really! Couldn?t you have thought of something more original?

That?s why we did the circular rings. It was original. Or at least we believe it to be.

But if you must copy us, then you should know there was no great trick to it. I simply ?did it?. And for the size of Shanra (our Capital City for which these rings were made) it works fine. Also the area I made was very big! So I have size on my side and it all looks like normal coast.

Nothing more I can tell you sorry..
There was no great trick to it.

Well it wasn't an exact copy :)
But I wanted a city that was completely enclosed in a valley, and seeing your map gave me the idea of haveing springs fed from a waterfall encircleing the city. But given the fact that I am not truely pleased wit ht he outcome of this, and the fact that I am now reading The annals of the black Company, by Glen Cook I may just change my whole map. All depends on several factors.

BTW I LOVE tragena!!!!! I wish I could design half the spectacle you have there!!! You all have an excellent team!!! The map is beautiful, the building design is absolutly amazeing!!!! I only hope mine can look half as well!!
